30 Day Song Challenge: Day Thirty!!!

Day Thirty: Your Favorite Song At This Time Last Year

So, the song I'm about to put down...I'm not sure is my favorite from last year, but it is definitely one I remember because the tiny tot was just beginning to notice music on her own and everytime the Samsung Smart TV commerical came on she'd notice and sing along...sorta.

I love Trains' song Hey Soul Sister because it reminds me of a wonderful time last summer hanging with the kidlet watching her notice her surroundings.

30 Day Song Challenge: Day Twenty-Nine

Day Twenty-Nine: A Song from your childhood

When I was a kid we used to listen to records a lot. More often than not these records were of music not meant to entertain little people like The Beach Boys, Cliff Richard, ABBA and other music that my aunts and Mom liked.

However, we had a handful of records meant for kids: Disney soundtracks, a Strawberry Shortcake record where she sang "Little Brown Jug", Marcie who was a puppet that sang hymns in a high pitched voice that my sister just loved and a record that we all loved, loved, loved called The Smurfs All Star Show...yes, the Smurfs.

My favorite song from that record, a song we all three still know the words to and a song that is definitely from my childhood is "Silly Shy Smurf" by the Smurfs...feel free to sing along, here are the lyrics.

Song Title: Silly Shy Smurf
From the album: The Smurfs All Star Show Album

Small shy, oh my oh my
won't even try
to make something out of himself
and if you look, smile
he'll run a mile
the poor little, silly shy smurf

Say booh
you know what he'll do
he'll hide in the loo
and probably stay there all day
and if you ask why
he'll never reply the poor little, silly shy smurf

Somebody tell him he musn't be shy
tell him he's lovely and good
Oooh oooh oooh oooh ooh, if somebody only would

Maybe we'll get him to see
he better agree
he's gotta get hold of himself
he really should, must or always be just
the poor, little, silly shy smurf

30 Day Song Challenge: Day Twenty-Eight

Day Twenty-Eight: A Song that makes you feel guilty

I don't really have a song that makes me feel guilty, I've even looked up the word guilty to help me find a song...below is what I came up with...

Guilty
–adjective, guilt·i·er, guilt·i·est.
1.  having committed an offense, crime, violation, or wrong, especially against moral or penal law; justly subject to a certain accusation or penalty; culpable: The jury found her guilty of murder.
2. characterized by, connected with, or involving guilt: guilty intent.
3. having or showing a sense of guilt, whether real or imagined: a guilty conscience.

[from Dictionary.com]

1. um...after I found out all about the sham that is the music piracy industry, I felt really guilty listening to all that music I downloaded from LimeWire or Napster for free in the mid and late 90s...
2. If I Was Your Girl Only Knew by Aaliyah or If by Janet Jackson envoke certain feelings, but I'm pretty sure none of them are, um...guilt...per se...*big grin*
3. sometimes when I listen to Christian music on the radio, I feel guilty that I haven't spent that much time with the Lord and then I remedy that and the feeling passes

What can I say I'm pretty honest and when I'm not I fix it (sometimes it may take a long time to fix, but it ALWAYS gets fixed)...hence, no songs that make me feel guilt...What kind of a question is that anyway?

30 Day Song Challenge: Day Twenty-seven

Day Twenty-Seven: A Song you wish you could play

I remember in 5th grade choosing to play the clarinet.
All the parents who had children interested in playing an instrument were invited to a meeting in the band room. There students who knew what they wanted to play were matched with sellers of the instruments and those who didn't know were in invited to test out instruments to determine what suited them best. I knew I wanted to play the clarinet. As I said last week, my grandfather played the clarinet and he and I had already had, what I felt was a mature conversation, on the subject. We purchased a Bundy clarinet and I brought it to my grandfather's house that weekend to show him.
I will never forget that weekend sitting in the living room watching my grandfather make my clarinet do things I never would. He played the scales (even the high notes) without squeaking, he played soft melodies and he played big Band music, a type of music I learned to love because of him. I can remember listening to Benny Goodman and Count Basie, Artie Shaw. Glen Miller and Django Reinhardt on those old heavy 78s. Later in my life I'd find Robert Johnson, Billie Holiday and the Blues, I attribute this find to my grandfather for putting me on the path to this great time in the History of American music. He even pulled out records of his Army days and he would point out instruments to me, so I'd know later the different sounds in a Jazz band and could tell the different between the brassy trumpet and sweet clarinet over the Jazz guitar or trumbone.
If I could play any song I'd like it to be Sing, Sing, Sing by Benny Goodman, the Clarinet King, a song my grandfather loved and so do I.

30 Day Song Challenge: Day Twenty-six

Day Twenty-Six: A Song that you can play on an instrument

Um, yeah, I'm envious of the people who have the discipline to play a musical instrument past the requisite years in junior high and high school. My husband plays the guitar. One of the best times is listening to him strum the songs, trying to guess what he's playing in just a few notes. My friend Jenn takes guitar lessons as an adult. Now that takes dedication! I tried to take piano lessons (as I've always wanted to play the piano), but quit after the easy stuff, I just didn't have time to practice and learn what I didn't already know.
You see I used to play the clarinet. It's the perfect instrument progression from the flutophone, and my grandfather played the clarinet when he was in the Army band in the 40s. I loved learning how to play, I loved learning how to read music, I loved making my grandfather proud. He even seasoned the keys for me (as my clarinet was new and the high notes were hard to play). In high school, however, being in Flags was a lot more fun and required less practice than marching...I stopped playing the clarinet.
The only song I can still play on the clarinet is "Baby Elephant Walk"...WOW! it's so fun to play...I'd play it right now if my mother hadn't sold my clarinet so my sister could have a snare drum...not that I'm still bitter!

30 Day Song Challenge: Day Twenty-Five

Day Twenty-Five: A Song that makes you laugh

          I am an easy laugh.
          Seriously.
There is no way that I could be that teacher that doesn't smile until Christmas. I find everything, including the humor of teenagers, funny.
Picking a song that makes me laugh is easy...it's only a song that has made me laugh my whole life, a song that we three girls begged our aunts and our mom to play over and over on the record player, a song that we bounced around to so much that the needle would skip and we'd only stop when one of them threatened that we were going to scratch said record and they wouldn't buy us a new one.
I remember one time we were all at my grandparents, it was summertime and all three of us were sick. I was the one to feel better last (although I'm the eldest I'm always last) and my mom, my aunts (Nellie and Nesie) and my grandpa were all in the closed in porch dancing around to songs and they started this one. Groaning I wrapped the purple and navy afghan of granny squares around me, groaning I grabbed my 7-Up and my bowl of soup and heading to the porch to at least dance a little. My mother made me lie back down (it was easy as I was 7 and feverish), but not before I did a little bit of the Monster Mash, my favorite song that makes me laugh.

Here's a cool list of novelty songs, oh and here's another (even if it does have Barbie Girl) and another...

30 Day Song Challenge: Day Twenty-four

Day Twenty-Four: A Song that you want to play at your funeral

What a morbid thought! So, I'm not going to dwell on it very long, and I'm definitely not going to make a playlist! But, here are two songs that I'd want played at my funeral "Victory in Jesus", as I taught myself how to play this on the organ and I've loved this song my whole life and it would be sooooo true, and To Where You Are by Josh Groban...powerful song about love and dying and faith. And, just incase you were wondering, yes I did watch Josh Groban perform it on the Ally McBeal episode where Billy dies and, yes, just incase you were wondering I did cry like I'd lost my first and only love...it was that unexpected and powerful. No I am not ashamed of that fact!

30 Day Song Challenge: Day Twenty-Three

Day Twenty-Three: A Song that you want to play at your wedding

My dream was to get married in Las Vegas...Sin City. When we had to plan our wedding my Home-Ec class, I chose to plan a Vegas wedding complete with getting married by The King himself. I love Elvis, gaudy over-the-top decorations, The Strip, Wal-Mart stores with Spanish-tiled roofs, heck I love all things Las Vegas. The song Waking Up in Vegas by Katy Perry had only been out a few months when Christopher and I decided to get hitched (read more about that here), and that's the song that's most in my mind when I think about our Vegas Wedding, sure it's not 'appropriate' but it is apropos. Below you will find a list of songs that are inspirational to going to Vegas and remind me of our trip although some (all right all) are not ideal wedding songs. Enjoy!
  1. Viva Las Vegas...Elvis Presley
  2. Leaving Las Vegas...Sheryl Crow
  3. Let's Go to Vegas...Faith Hill
  4. Heaven or Las Vegas...Cocteau Twins
  5. Me and My Monkey...Robbie Williams
  6. Casino Queen...Wilco
  7. Vegas...Sara Bareilles
  8. Sin City...AC/DC
  9. Luck Be A Lady...Frank Sinatra
  10. Sway...Michael Buble
  11. Kick in the Head...Dean Martin
  12. Spinning Wheel...Tom Jones
  13. Pretty Vegas...INXS
  14. Mambo Italiano...Rosemary Clooney
  15. Spaceman...The Killers
  16. Going to Vegas...Jimmy Ray
  17. Let It Ride...Charlie Clouser
  18. Las Vegas Nights...Hootie and the Blowfish

30 Day Song Challenge: Day Twenty-Two

Day Twenty-Two: A song that you listen to when  you're sad
Genuinely, when I'm sad (which is rare) I don't like to dwell in it too much...I can think of better ways to get over being sad besides listening to music walled up in the dark. In college, my friends could always tell I was in a melancholy mood by the music I listened to and whether I was listening to it alone in my room or while doing something else. It seemed that everytime I was sad, I'd listen to The Cranberries rather loudly and alone in my room...door opened, I guess to subtly annoy others...that can't have been uplifting in any way at all. Even now  when I'm sad you'll find that I go back to Dolores O'Riordan and the guys, one CD especially, No Need to Argue, and one song especially the title song, "No Need To Argue"...seriously, though, I only listen to that song if I want to wallow.
