30 Day Book Challenge: Day 13

Last year I found this book challenge (since then I have seen many variations of it, but I like this one best!), and have been intrigued about how I would answer the questions posed. Obviously, I started this challenge over 30 days ago...I just wasn't inspired. It isn't as easy to write about books as I thought.

Feel free to comment with your own answer or post the challenge to your own blog.

A Book Or Series of Books You've Read More Than Five Times

Childhood Book

I'm quantifying this category by first making it a book that I pick and could read on my own and second by making it a book that I read that had deeper meaning and themes. That cuts out all those books that my mother read to me or that I read to my sisters and it cuts out books like those about Amelia Bedelia. I remember thinking about this book as I read it and I remember talking about it to my friends. I know it's one of the first science fiction books I ever read.

Young Adult Book (Just so you know it's a series)

I love these books and you can read all about here.

Current Young Adult Book (as in read by me recently)

55 Books in a Year: Book #6 Between the Land and the Sea

Through Twitter and the lovely Anna Banks (who's book I can't wait to read) I found MerBooks: The Group For All Things Mermaid.

Information about the Group
In this group you can talk about all things Mermaid! We'll also keep the group updated on new Merbooks coming out!

The MerBlog: The Blog For All Things Mermaid
What I've learned?

  • I'm definitely behind in the mermaid book reading thing...where have I been? I now have a list about a mile long.
  • There are grown-ups who are as obsessed about mermaids as I am.
  • I can easily find 10 mermaid books to read this year.
  • If you buy a book on Smashwords the author gets more profits than if you buy it somewhere else.
  • Authors don't really need agents or money to sell books anymore.

I started my MerChallenge with The Little Mermaid and quickly followed up with Derrolyn Anderson's book Between the Land and the Sea, as she is giving it away to group members who email her.

This book is adorable and delightful. Marina doesn't know she's from the sea as her mother died giving birth to her and her father just doesn't talk about it. They live in the city where her neighbor lavishes her with designer clothes and hand bags and fancy cars, and, kind of like a wealthy benefactor from an Austen novel, is always there when Marina needs to dress or drive to impress. While her scientist father spends a year in Afghanstian, she is sent to live with her eccentric tofu eating aunt and her goth designer son. As Marina learns about herself and her past, she helps those around her find their true selves. This is especially true of her relationship with her cousin Cruz and his friend Megan. Through Marina they both learn that outside their small town they are normal and wonderful.

I enjoyed that this book is set in a real town (that I would love to visit someday), you can see pictures on Anderson's official blog.

I also enjoy how Anderson writes a story where the main issue isn't the fact that Marina is part mermaid, but the fact that she was never told. I also like that her relationship with Ethan, a delicious blonde surfer boy, is forged through the water and a mutual secret.

This book has a cliffhanger and happy ending at the same time with everyone wrapped up in self assurance and coupledom.

You know come to think of it, if Jane Austen were a modern woman who wrote about mermaids (fun to think about right!?) I bet she would have written a book like this one, or at least she would have been inspired by it.

I look forward to reading the rest. I hope there are only four.

4 Stars

There are a handful of issues that bug me (for instance, Marina's father, who is not existent throughout the book, wins the Nobel Prize and I'm supposed to care and how many times can we have hospital stays, really), but they do not, in any way, harm the story.

Following the cliffhanger ending of Blood of Amber, Merlin is stranded in surrealistic Alice in Wonderland-esque bar where the Mad Hatter serves cocktails. Managing to escape, Merlin meets new family members--one of whom is intent on killing him. As events escalates, Merlin finds himself surrounded by his worst enemies including his ex-girlfriend--back from the dead.

A book series you wish had gone on longer OR a book series you wish would just freaking end already (or both!)
Always up for a challenge, I'm doing both!

A Series I Wished Had Gone On Longer
The Chronicles of Amber by Roger Zelazny

From Goodreads:
Amber is the one real world, casting infinite reflections of itself -- Shadow worlds, that can be manipulated by those of royal Amberite blood. But the royal family is torn apart by jealousies and suspicion; the disappearance of the Patriach Oberon has intensified the internal conflict by leaving the throne apparently up for grabs. In a hospital on the Shadow Earth, a young man is recovering from a freak car accident; amnesia has robbed him of all his memory, even the fact that he is Corwin, Crown Prince of Amber, rightful heir to the throne -- and he is in deadly peril ...The five books, Nine Princes in Amber, The Guns of Avalon, Sign of the Unicorn, The Hand of Oberon and The Courts of Chaos, together make up The Chronicles of Amber, Roger Zelazny's finest work of fantasy and an undisputed classic of the genre.

My uncle found the original Corwin books in a shed on my grandfather's land. They had been purchased by my other uncles (SF nerds that they are) and SF nerd that he knows I am, after he read them he let me borrow them. By then he'd moved on to the Merlin books, I was not content with just have the books to borrow, and was lucky enough to find my own copies to own and possess and spent many a year at used bookstores looking for the others...and then I found The Great Book of Amber, so I own all the Merlin paperbacks, the two Corwin hardcovers and this book. Although the whole series ends satisfactorially I would still like to read more about Merlin and Cor, I miss them. Zelazny died of cancer at such a young age (58) that I know he would have written more. I feel a reread coming on!

A Book Series I Wish Would Just End
that FRIGGIN' Gabaldon series

From Goodreads
The year is 1945. Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon--when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient stone circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach--an "outlander"--in a Scotland torn by war and raiding Highland clans in the year of Our Lord...1743.

Hurled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire is catapulted into intrigues and dangers that may threaten her life...and shatter her heart. For here she meets James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, and becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire...and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.

I wish this book series would end for purely selfish reason...I want to start reading it. I have those of you who are so obsessed with this series wait in line forever to by the latest one, I will not be that person. I hate waiting, and, although my friends say that each book is over 700 pages, I know I will love this series and I know I will read them all in a matter of months and then be just like the other Gabaldon addicts...waiting...

Instead, I will be like my friend Michelle, she is just NOW starting The Harry Potter series, she knows very little about it and was waiting for all the books and for the hype to die down.

Ms. Diana Gabaldon...I know you love your characters and don't want to stop writing about them, but for the love of Pete this was series was supposed to end like two books ago.

But, don't you worry...Gar! I'll just wait some more!!!

And, she seems like such a nice lady
And, so begins a new 30 Day challenge...

50 Books in a Year: Book #37 Catching Fire

I stumbled upon this series totally by accident. Er...sorta. I was planning on reading the series...really, just closer to the movie after THE REST OF THE WORLD had read them and I could read them alone...sorta.

Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins
How I fell into this one: I had asked my friend Kay, via Facebook, if I could borrow her copies while visiting her in Colorado. The day we were to leave, she commented that she had the books on her Kindle and wondered why I didn't borrow it earlier in the week. I said that I didn't know and borrowed the Kindle immediately, as I had to read two books in less than 24 hrs. not counting, sleeping, packing and watching the child time. Just incase you were wondering, I did it.

Reaction:
Just incase you don't know the plot, here it is from Goodreads:
Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark won the annual competition described in Hunger Games, but the aftermath leaves these victors with no sense of triumph. Instead, they have become the poster boys for a rebellion that they never planned to lead. That new, unwanted status puts them in the bull's-eye for merciless revenge by The Capitol. Catching Fire maintains the adrenaline rush of Suzanne Collins's series launch.
Likes
Peeta, seriously, I spent this whole book liking him more and more and more. No matter how much Katniss misread him (and, I couldn't believe that she was still...er...I'll save that for 'dislikes') he was there for her. I love how Collins added just simple gestures to let us know that Peeta would do anything for Miss Everdeen and she doesn't see it. Cinna is my favorite character, he is like 'Sassy Gay Friend' meets Rupert Evert meets every girls dream boat. He laughs, he cries, he creates spectacular clothes and he's a perfect 'Jimmie Cricket'. I do feel a little guilty that my favorite characters in this female driven book are male, but c'est la vie. I'm do like how Kat seems to be seriously conflicted between her two male best friends and I like how she's beginning to understand her role and how wonderful and powerful she is to the world and to herself.
Dislikes
I'm really glad that Katniss gets better in the next book because I spent most of this book wanted to give her a little shake. I mean everytime she talked or reacted I wanted to shake her ever so lightly, and say something like "Girl, please!".

50 Books in a Year: Books #33 The Hunger Games

I stumbled upon this series totally by accident. Er...sorta. I was planning on reading the series...really, just closer to the movie after THE REST OF THE WORLD had read them and I could read them alone...sorta.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
How I fell into this one: My friend Julie and I had tickets for the NKOTBSB concert exactly 48 hrs. after the U2 concert...I was tired as I drove to St. Louis to meet her so I bought an energy drink one of those Monster M3 jobs, my first...heck it was my first (and, I'm not gonna lie...probably not my last!) foray into energy drinkdom. I was awake for the concert, awake for conversation after and...awake wayyyyyy after Julie went to bed. What was sitting on the end table by the futon? The whole set of the Hunger Games (thank-you Julies BF)...I read most of this book that night and finished it before left to go home.
Reaction: OK, so I've been reading all these amazing articles about how YA SF has really gone head over spaceship to create work that appeals to adults as well as kids and after the whole OVER THE TOP vampire craze, I am all for this new YA Dystopic phase...actually it's making this unit that I teach even easier as 3 years ago I spent a class period explaining things that kids already know now. Yippie! The thing is that no matter how well it's written it's still written for kids and not those kids who were reading LotR or Zelazny or Conan books in high school. If I were 11 or 12 and just found this book, I would have been blown away by the plot, by the characters, by the freshness of it all!
Just incase you don't know the plot, here it is from Goodreads:
In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.

Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before—and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that will weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

Likes
The freshness of the plot...I mean I read a lot of dystopic lit and this is the first I've read that pits teen against teen in some government controlled fight to the death. I also like the way Collins lets us get to know most all the characters in the Games, so we are over-whelmed and sad even when bully children die. There are sooo many wonderful scenes that I can't wait to see rendered in the movie and the reason is because Collins can write a heck of a story.
Dislikes
While Katniss is pretty kick-butt compared to Bella Swan, she still isn't totally the teenage girl that I want my daughter to model herself after. Physically she is amazing! She bow hunts with her male friend Gale, she Mentally she is stunning! She has great inference skills, uses the medical training she received from watching her mother to help more than one of the kids in the Hunger Games, she understands enough about how bad the Hunger Games are that she makes it difficult for those in charge. Emotionally!!! she is just like every other teen girl in these books!!! She needs the boy to help her understand anything that requires the least bit of emotion or thought. She distrust everyone (just like the teenager girls in these books) and while she isn't lost without boys...she is lost without boys.

What I thought about the series as a whole?!
I am in love with this series and look forward to talking about it with my students.

Cliffhanger...can't hold on much longer...

As I'm sure many of you remember this fact: I hate suspense...I hate waiting! This week has been KILLING ME!!! All four of my favorite shows (all on CBS, go figure!) have ended KA-RAZYLY!!! I don't know what I am going to do...as waiting all summer will really crimp my style, I'll just have to obsess over the re-runs!

SPOILERS!!!

The Mentalist Those of you who have been following this show know that Patrick Jane has been stalking/obsessing over this man Red John who murdered his wife and daughter. Last night at the end of the show he shoots Red John and waits patiently for the police to come and take him away. He's sipping tea and all I can think is, "Did that just really happen!? Or, is this just another of Red John's games?" Unfortunately, I won't know for awhile!!! (Oh, and I also hear this show may be ending...GAR!)

Hawaii 5-0 The opening episode (the best show opener in the history of television) concluded with the 5-0 being commissioned by the governor of Hawaii. The final episode has the governor killed by Wo Fat, McGarrett framed for it, Danny's ex-wife pregnant with his baby, Cho back on the force and Kono arrested for taking part in a heist. I'm not sure how they're going to get out of all these jams. I'm going to spend all summer trying to figure out how they're going to do that!

Last season's NCIS: LA season closer really ticked me off and then they spent a large portion of this season ticking me off on a regular basis...I hate it when a show kills off a main character, I hate it when a show moves an endearing character off of the show and into the horizons of Never Neverland...the only redemption is that Deeks is funny and Gs' life is wrapped up in mystery. The final episode of this season has G remember his past life in Prague, but the team including Heddy,  excluded Eric and the new girl, quitting NCIS, obtaining black market guns, flying to Prague and kicking some butt. Heddy and G are also family members of some sort of old school mafia-type feud and G is the last of his kind, whhhhhattttt???

Now, the original NCIS manages to kill off characters every season, so I was not shocked when they killed off Mike Franks...I didn't even shed a tear or get angry. I was waiting for someone to die...So, how were they going to make sure that tried and true NCIS fans like myself feel all twitchy all summer long??? Put Tony back into an undercover op, of course. The last time he was undercover he fell in love and we spent the whole season watching a doomed relationship. I'm not really sure what to expect this time, however, as they've left the "TOP SECRET" folder's information out of our view...leaving us to speculate (based only on Tony's facial expression) who this next person might be...I'm thinking Gibs or Ziva or McGee or...blar! I don't know and I'll spend the rest of the summer spinning my wheels.

Curse you CBS, CURSE YOU!!!

"I'll Take 'Books in a Series' for 400, Alex"

"I hate suspense, really I do. I like to know what's happening at all times and to whom, especially if it is to me." ~Michael Thomas Ford

I love, love, love Michael Thomas Fords' writing and have since reading the books of his syndicated column "My Queer Life", but enough about MT Ford for now...I'll save him for a different post. Instead I want to talk about book series.

In short, I can't stand them.
To elaborate, I can't stand them because they make me wait.
To clarify, I hate waiting.

I don't read books in a series until a series is complete finished. I read the first six Harry Potter books in six days, waited in line the day the 7th came out, bought it and then read it that day. I haven't started the Percy Jackson books...I hear they're not finished. When I was a kid I stopped reading The Sweet Valley books because they never stop. People have told me that I would love The Outlander series, but Diana Gabaldon won't stop writing...6th book, 7th book, 8th book...ah, geez!!! I read Twilight on a flight to DC, Eclipse on the return home, bought New Moon and Breaking Dawn at Border's with a friend (you know who you are Julie Andrews) and read them both the same day as soon as I got home. I haven't read the Lemony Snicket books, don't know if they're truly finished. I've never started reading Romance novels on a regular basis, don't even get me started about my need to collect, and those Harlequin ones are numbered and I'd want all the numbers. I only started reading the Dune books, after I researched and realized there were only so many that Frank Herbert actually wrote, I'm only reading the Frank Herbert ones (I told a Barnes and Noble cashier, I hope they're called cashiers, and not some cute name like barista, and he said I was making a wise choice). I read Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta novels because I choose to ignore the back stories and focus on the murders and forensics.

But, enough about my need for control and dominance.

Only after finding out that Stieg Larsson was no longer with us and that all the books had been published, did I begin to look at The Girl series. I bought the books (one in paper back, the others on the Nook), I was excited, I was going to have a series to read over the summer (as I could tell from the first paragraph it was going to take me longer to read each book than the day afforded to a Rowling or Meyer)...and, then, I started to read the first book (so excited!) as I got past the part with the mysterious flower, and finally began reading about the main character Mikael Blomkvist, I heard and then I read and then I became leery of the fact that there may be another book out there.

I will not pick the book back up until I'm certain that there isn't.
I will not watch the movies until I know there are no more books.
