30 Day Book Challenge: Day 29

Last year I found this book challenge (since then I have seen many variations of it, but I like this one best!), and have been intrigued about how I would answer the questions posed. Feel free to comment with your own answer or post the challenge to your own blog.

I assume you know the following is chock full of spoilers...

Saddest character death OR best/most satisfying character death (or both!)

Saddest character death
I have never been more surprised than when Emma Morley dies in One Day. Frankly, I was a little surprised at myself for crying at the end of the book when I read Love Story; I mean I already knew what was going to happen and, yet, there I was bawling and really getting into it. Frankly, Love Story is the only book that I've purposely read knowing someone I fall in love with is going to die. I truly avoid those kinds of books like the plague. I'll leave that kind of escapism to those who like their romances tragic.

Best/most satisfying character death
There aren't any books where I'm glad that characters die...that's kind of morbid really. I mean here's an example...Voldemort finally dies in this epic battle with Harry. All the same old rot that we see in all books of this genre...you know good vs. evil and light vs. dark and the hero must go it alone et cetera comes in to play. And, all I can think about at the end, after his death, is about all the characters that had to die to make his death possible and about how it's not really triumphant at all, is it? I mean not really...if we start from Harry's parents and end with the death of the Weasley twin (a death I am still pissed off about, actually, so much so that I don't know if I can ever watch the movies), Voldemort's death does not in any way feel satisfying at all; actually it feels very weak in comparison to all the other feelings I was having up to that point.

Last year I found this book challenge (since then I have seen many variations of it, but I like this one best!), and have been intrigued about how I would answer the questions posed. Feel free to comment with your own answer or post the challenge to your own blog.

First favorite book or series obsession

OK, so when I read these books in the early 80s...there were only, um...4. Frankly, I didn't know there was a 5th book until, um...college. I have never read it. I don't really understand how this could be part of two series, but I digress.

The Time Quartet was the first series of books I was totally obsessed about and it's first book A Wrinkle in Time was the first book I read more than once. There for awhile I read it every year.

I love, love, love, love this series and all I have to do to be propelled to a simpler time is open up the pages of any one of these books. I can remember sitting on the floor of my bedroom, radio on, contemplating the fifth dimension and thinking about what I would do if I had a brother like Charles Wallace.

My husband and I watched the movie sometime last summer. It didn't really hold as much magic as the book.

OMG WTF? OR most irritating/awful/annoying book ending

Do I really need to say *spoiler alert* right now, I'm talking about an ending.

If I had grown up with the Harry Potter books...I would have been so disappointed with the ending of that series. As it were, I still HATE the ending of the Harry Potter series. That epilogue is gah! the death of so many! ugh! I'm not sure what I'd say to J.K. Rowling if I met her...I'm sure it would be full of expletives...I'm not sure it would be all that nice. I mean come on, JK, come on!

And, yes, I know how I would have ended it...a certain wizard in glasses would have been the ultimate sacrifice...but, really did anyone have to die for the point to be proven?

Any Five Books From Your "To Be Read" Stack

OK, so I have 764 books in my TBR pile on Goodreads. If I read one of those a week it would take me almost 15 years...that is, of course, if I don't add any more books to the pile, which is not (use your best hoyty-toyty British accent) "Not Bloody Likely". I take comfort in knowing that my TBR list is shorter than my Read list and I move on...

Here are 5 books, that I really, really, really want to read, and, yet, every year they're in still looking at me in my TBR.

Kindred Octavia Butler
The Name of the Rose Umberto Eco
Neverwhere Neil Gaiman
American On Purpose Craig Ferguson
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy John le Carre

"I don't want diamond sunbursts, or marble halls. I just want you."
sigh...
I'm pretty sure Anne Shirley's relationship with Gilbert Blythe colored my idea of romantic love at an early age.

However, Howard Roark and Dominique Francon really opened my eyes to...um...another type of relationship entirely...

Last year I found this book challenge (since then I have seen many variations of it, but I like this one best!), and have been intrigued about how I would answer the questions posed. Feel free to comment with your own answer or post the challenge to your own blog.

Favorite Kiss
My first book kiss happened...in this book...it is my favorite...if you read the excerpt you can see why...I mean I think I read this book when I was 11...that's a pretty hot kiss for an 11 year-old!

Slumber Party Christopher Pike
    "You're right. But you're a cute case."
    "Really? No."
    "Yes."
They were debating life and death, forces beyond the physical universe, and she forgot it all when he told her she was cute. "You're cute, too," she said.
He laughed, "Don't you think I know that?"
She moved closer, careful not to light herself on fire, feeling suddenly brave. "No laughs, I'm serious."
For all his class, his confidence, he seemed touched. He tossed the flare aside. "I'm going to kiss you." He put his hands on her shoulders and leaned forward. Lara closed her eyes, tilted her head back, and waited. And waited, feeling like Scarlett O'Hara. She ventured a look. Percy was worried.
"I'm not going to stop you," she said.
Poor boy, his conscience was getting in the way. "You're still in high school," he said nervously.
"Do I look like I'm in high school?"
    "Not really."
"Then forget that I am. I'm eighteen!" Actually she was seventeen. "The law won't come after you."
"That's not what I was thinking! I just want you to know that I'm not the type of guy who tries to take advantage of the situation."
"Percy, it is ten degrees below zero. You're not going to take off my clothes, and I very much doubt that you want me to undress you. You can't take advantage of this situation."
He laughed. "This is a side of you that I haven't seen before."
Lara laughed, too. "I haven't seen it before either."
He kissed her. His nose was cold, his lips warm. She felt good in his arms, as if she wanted to stay there a long, long time. Hadn't a poet said that talk of death was the most potent aphrodisiac? She had never done it before, had always thought girls who did it on the spur of the moment without protection were fools. Yet she suddenly found herself wishing that it was a warm summer night with thick beds of grass behind the trees. He slipped his arms inside her coat at the back picking her up slightly. His mouth tasted like carrot cake. She loved carrot cake. She leaned into him at the waist. He slipped and landed on his back. She went along for the ride, bursting into giggles.
    "What happened?"

30 Day Book Challenge: Day 19

Last year I found this book challenge (since then I have seen many variations of it, but I like this one best!), and have been intrigued about how I would answer the questions posed. Feel free to comment with your own answer or post the challenge to your own blog.

Favorite Book Cover (Bonus points for posting an Image!)

Here are some choice covers from a book I love to collect just for the covers!
Some are just concepts, but don't they all just scream "I'm The Scarlet Letter!"
I love The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. I love teaching it. I love to read it every year. I love to look at its new covers...as publishers try to entice young adults to purchase and read it. I own many of the copies above, just because I liked the covers. The big picture with the 'Gossiping Gerties', the flowy hair and the gorgeous rosebush is by far my new fav! But, look at some of the others:

1] First row, second from left is Scaffold #2...sigh...
2] First row, fourth one is the only one I've ever seen that has a male on the cover...I can only assume it's Dimmesdale without Hester or is that the hotty picture of Nathaniel himself?...I wonder who the publisher thinks the book is really about?
3] First row, fifth one is the cover of the book I teach...I think Hester is so pretty in that picture!
4] First row, final one is the cover of my first personal copy. I bought it used and added notes to the notes that were already there.
5] Second row, final one is concept cover, I believe, but I love it! It looks a little bit mid-century and the dress says the word 'adultery' over and over...
6] Third row, second one, must have come out after Twilight, hmmm...???

30 Day Book Challenge: Day 18

Last year I found this book challenge (since then I have seen many variations of it, but I like this one best!), and have been intrigued about how I would answer the questions posed. Obviously, I started this challenge over 30 days ago...I just wasn't inspired. It isn't as easy to write about books as I thought.

Feel free to comment with your own answer or post the challenge to your own blog.

Favorite beginning scene in a book

     Howard Roark laughed.
He stood naked at the edge of a cliff. The lake lay far below him. A frozen explosion of granite burst in flight to the sky over motionless water. The water seemed immovable, the stone flowing. The stone had the stillness of one brief moment in battle when thrust meets thrust and the currents are held in a pause more dynamic than motion. The stone glowed, wet with sunrays.
The lake below was only a thin steel ring that cut the rocks in half. The rocks went on into the depth, unchanged. They began and ended in the sky. So that the world seemed suspended in space, an island floating on nothing, anchored to the feet of the man on the cliff.
His body leaned back against the sky. It was a body of long straight lines and angles, each curve broken into planes. He stood, rigid, his hands hanging at his sides, palms out. He felt his shoulder blades drawn tight together, the curve of his neck, and the weight of the blood in his hands. He felt the wind behind him in the hollow of his spine. The wind waved his hair against the sky. His hair was neither blond nor red, but the exact color of ripe orange rind.
He laughed at the thing which had happened to him that morning and at the things which now lay ahead.
