GAR! Narrowing down albums that I love down to a favorite album is as hard as picking a favorite song, however this is a challenge. So...hopefully going down memory lane will help me find an album with which to find a favorite song.
The first album I ever remember falling in love with was the soundtrack from Grease, I remember listening to this double album in my grandparents living room, playing the first half over and over (that was the half with the musical music, that was the half with Frankie Valli). I remember my next few years in a blur of 45s ("We Built This City" mostly), my uncles old 8-tracks (Jefferson Airplane...or was it Starship?...mostly) and album after album, musical soundtracks ("The King and I", "West Side Story", "South Pacific" and more) and Big Band and Jazz, my grandfathers, country (Donny and Marie anyone?), my Mom's Elvis, my uncles Rock and my aunts Pop. It was the latter that stuck in those early years The Beach Boys, Abba and Cliff Richards' "We Don't Talk Anymore" and in my later years with New Kids and Debbie Gibson and, Heaven help me, Ace of Base. I would still marry Michael Jackson, and there is a part of me that will always be sad about his passing. On my own I gravitated towards Billie Holiday and Robert Johnson. On my own I found U2, although that love was cultivated in college. On my own, or should I say with the help of my friends, I found the Rolling Stones and my favorite British invaders, The Beatles. It was in junior high that I found a love for Christian Rock and, my sisters and I listened to DC Talk (Toby Mac is still a favorite) until the VHS tapes and cassettes dragged.
And, then Queen happened, and they opened up a whole other side of music...you wouldn't think Queen could lead to all those glorious Grunge bands of the 90s, but they did. And, the 90s were spent in a daze of Pearl Jam and Nirvana and Hole and Stone Temple Pilots and Soundgarden. Oh, and Nine Inch Nails...thank-you very much, dear English 120 teacher. Then there's all that wonderful Grrl Rock with Ani DiFranco leading the way...there's The Cranberries and Mazzie Star and Sheryl Crow. Classic Rock also happened in the 90s when a boy in one of the classes I was student teaching introduced me to Led Zepplin and Pink Floyd. This boy made me a mix tape that was one sided...I should have kept it...as I gave it back to him to add another side and I never got it back.
When the 90s ended with that horrible Bubble Gum wave, I followed and bought 90s Brit Pop and N'Sync and Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears and here I am now with a soundtrack to my life that only I could tolerate listening to all the way through.And, then Queen happened, and they opened up a whole other side of music...you wouldn't think Queen could lead to all those glorious Grunge bands of the 90s, but they did. You know, now that I think about I think I've known what song I should put down all along. "Thriller" by Michael Jackson is definitely my favorite song from my favorite album...it was the first record that I actually owned, the first record that was mine and it has made all the transfers from record to CD to iPod. It is the backbone of my taste in music, as it is definitely Pop, but it isn't late 90s cheese. And, it reminds me of my childhood, which, as I look at it through music, was even more delightful than I remembered.
